Witcher 3 Anniversary Celebrated With PS5, Xbox Series X Upgrade Delay

CD Projekt Red has announced that the next-gen version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has been officially delayed until the end of 2022. The open-world fantasy epic first released in 2015, with many gamers considering the monster hunter simulator to be one of the greatest games of all time. While a Witcher 3 next-gen update was originally intended for release earlier in 2022, the shiny new version of Geralt’s final adventure will arrive later than expected.

As the third installment in the fantasy role-playing trilogy, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt takes players on an epic open-world journey across the vast Continent. The title’s main storyline follows Geralt on a quest to find his adopted daughter Ciri, but along the way players are also faced with a wide range of in-depth side missions and optional activities. A robust combat system lets players use swords, magic Signs, potions and poisons to cleverly exploit the weaknesses of both human and inhuman foes. Despite launching back in 2015 fans have recently accused CD Projekt Red of favoring Witcher 3 over Cyberpunk 2077, with the developer renewing focus on the fantasy series following the sci-fi title’s disastrous launch.

To celebrate the 7-year anniversary of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s release, The Witcher (via Twitter) has established a firm release window for the next-gen version of the game. While the updated rerelease has sadly been delayed by several months, gamers can now definitively expect the game to reach PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles in the fourth quarter of 2022. This means that the game will be available just in time for the holidays, gives players a chance to experience a brand-new edition of the beloved title as they head into the new year.

While CD Projekt Red intends to release The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt yet again, the developer also recently announced development of The Witcher 4. Little is currently known about the project, but it has been confirmed that the fourth installment in the series will kick off a brand-new saga of titles. The image of a snow-covered lynx medallion, in contrast to the wolf medallion famously worn by Geralt, implies that The Witcher 4 will feature a brand-new playable protagonist. CD Projekt Red is also building this upcoming sequel using Unreal Engine 5, rather than the REDengine used to craft The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, to create an enhanced open world.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt continues to be an extremely popular title, and a next-gen update is sure to draw gamers back into Geralt’s monster-hunting boots. However, many fans will no doubt be disappointed about the rerelease’s delay into the fourth quarter of 2022. Considering the already gorgeous visuals and detailed world featured in The Witcher 3, it seems likely that the game will be truly breathtaking on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
