Who Is The Rapper In Ozark Season 4 Part 2?

Killer Mike’s short scene is definitely more low-key compared to most other celebrity cameos in movies and TV series, but it’s definitely on-brand for Ozark, as Killer Mike’s Ozark cameo is a reminder to Ruth that she’s in the real world. Still distraught by Wyatt’s death, Ruth hallucinates killing Javi and even Wendy and Marty Byrde throughout Ozark season 4, episode 8 “The Cousin of Death,” until she eventually kills Javi in reality. Moreover, Killer Mike’s presence finally gives Ruth someone she can actually talk to about rap, a momentary respite as Ruth grieves for Wyatt, with whom Ruth also discussed music.

Why Nas’ Illmatic Album Plays Throughout “Cousin Of Death”

Ozark‘s overarching themes are very much in line with the messages in Nas’ acclaimed 1994 album Illmatic – considered to be one of the most influential rap records of all time. Ozark season 4 part 2 was released exactly 10 days after the 28th anniversary of Illmatic. Although the Ozarks and New York are very different topographically, Ruth’s decisions in Ozark are highly evocative of Nas’ perspective in Illmatic. Apart from how Ruth is about the same age as Nas when Illmatic came out, both Ruth and Nas grew up in the poor side of town with a great view of how the rich live privileged lives, which, as Killer Mike explains, is hopeful and cruel at the same time. In short, both Ruth and Nas are hustlers – the elite byproducts of their respective oppressive environments. This is why Ruth is so drawn to hip hop. As Nas raps in “N.Y. State of Mind:”

“I never sleep, ’cause sleep is the cousin of death. Beyond the walls of intelligence, life is defined. I think of crime when I’m in the New York state of mind.”

Ozark is streaming now on Netflix.
