Panic announced that pre-orders for Playdate have started shipping.
In a new video update, Portland-based indie publisher-turned-wearables maker Panic has announced that the first set of pre-orders will be shipped “gradually” starting today and in the coming weeks. If you’re in the first group and waiting for your Playdate to ship, keep an eye out for the email you registered when pre-ordering the device, as Panic says it will contact customers when the device ships.

In case this little yellow handheld device has gone unnoticed by now, it’s a cute little tool with a crank that pulls out from the side. Buy the full season with 24 exclusive games for $179, and the new season will be released for free in 12 weeks. Some Playdate games are made by seasoned indie developers, including Katamari Damacy director Keita Takahashi and Sam & Max’s Chuck Jordan, while others are debuting. This is mainly due to Playdate’s very easy-to-use software development kit (SDK), which supports open sideloading.
GameMe’s 4.5/5 star Playdate review praised the solid yet lightweight feel, the game’s creative list, and most importantly, the excellent cranks that were used throughout most of the Playdate’s first season.
