Microsoft’s OneDrive: Can It Store And Stream Digital Music?

OneDrive is a cloud storage service, but can it play your music library?

Microsoft OneDrive (formerly known as sky drive) is an online storage service that lets you store photos, documents, and other media, as well as create and edit certain types of Microsoft Office files.

What is OneDrive?

OneDrive is part of a suite of cloud-based services provided by Microsoft. These services can be accessed through a single Microsoft username and password. But what about digital music? Can OneDrive be used to store and stream your song library?

Below are some frequently asked questions about the service’s functionality as a music sharing platform.

Can I upload and stream my music library to OneDrive?

Yes, but it’s not a one-step process. OneDrive can store almost any file you want, including music files. However, you can’t stream music directly from OneDrive. Clicking on a song you’ve uploaded will only give you the option to download it.

To stream audio from OneDrive, you must use Microsoft’s Xbox Music service. The two services are linked together, and while Xbox Music is essentially a subscription service (Xbox Music Pass), you can use it for free to stream a ton of your own music.

Another caveat: you can’t upload music to the old OneDrive folder.it must be in music document. If you don’t use this destination, Xbox Music won’t recognize your files as streaming.

Files can be uploaded using a browser or the OneDrive app.

What audio formats are supported?

Currently, you can upload songs encoded in the following audio formats:

  • MP3
  • Civil Aviation Administration (M4A)
  • WMA

As expected, you cannot play DRM copy protected files such as M4P or WMA Protected. Microsoft also said that some lossless AAC files may not play properly.

How many songs can OneDrive upload?

The current upload limit is 50,000 files. The problem with OneDrive is that your uploads eat into your storage limit; Google doesn’t have this limit on the number of gigabytes it provides. This means that if you only have the standard 15GB, you’ll run out of space before you hit the 50,000 file limit.

If you’re already an Xbox Music Pass subscriber, you’ll get an extra 100GB of storage to play games.

To increase OneDrive storage space for free, Microsoft is currently rewarding users who install the OneDrive app and enable camera backup. If you’ve never installed the app, this is a great way to get more storage space for your music files.
