JJ Abrams Shares The Leia Gift He Received From Carrie Fisher

Star Wars director J.J. Abrams recently shared a picture of the Princess Leia gift that he received from the late Carrie Fisher in honor of Star Wars Day, May the 4th. Abrams served as writer, director, and producer for Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, which kick-started a new trilogy of Star Wars films. The film saw the introduction of new characters such as Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe (Oscar Isaac), but also the return of iconic characters from the original Star Wars trilogy like Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), and Princess Leia Organa (Fisher).

Leia proved to be one of the most important characters in the Star Wars saga. After her homeworld and family were wiped out by the Death Star in A New Hope, she took up a central role in the rebellion against the Galactic Empire. Following Emperor Palpatine’s death, and the birth of the New Republic, Leia was a crucial part of the new government but also saw the rising First Order threat for what it truly was. In the Sequel Trilogy, Leia leads the Resistance as an experienced general against the rebirth of the Empire, placing Fisher at the heart of the new films. Unfortunately, in 2016, the actor died before she could film her role in Star Wars: Episode IX – Rise of Skywalker. Abrams used a combination of archival footage and stand-ins to bring her character back to life for the final film of the Skywalker saga.

In celebration of Star Wars Day, Abrams recently took to Twitter and shared an image of a gift that was given to him by Fisher before she passed. Prominently displayed in the image is a small Princess Leia statue with a caption that reads, “One of a handful of gifts from the late, extraordinarily great Carrie Fisher.  Happy #StarWarsDay and #MayThe4thBeWithYou!” Take a look at the statue below.

Fisher was known for her sense of humor, and a gift as unique as this fits with the actor’s distinctive personality. The diminutive statue is similar to that of the ancient Greek nude arm-less marble sculpture Venus de Milo. The original figure depicted the Roman counterpart of the Greek goddess of Aphrodite, a god of love, fertility, and sex. However, the statue in the image is fitted with the head of Princess Leia with her hair wrapped in its iconic bun styling.

The gift only gives credence to the stories surrounding Fisher’s unique brand of comedy. Since the star’s untimely passing, colleagues and fans have continued to praise Fisher, honoring her with tributes and memories. Hamill has continuously released images, behind-the-scenes videos, and stories of his time with Fisher, proving that Fisher’s legacy is more than just a Star Wars character, but a bright personality of wit, humor, and kindness.
