How To Turn Off Apple Watch’s Always On Display

There are a couple of ways to turn off the Always On display on your Apple Watch — the easiest of which is on your iPhone. Open the Watch app on your iPhone, tap ‘Display & Brightness,’ tap ‘Always On,’ and tap the toggle next to ‘Always On.’ Once the toggle changes from green to gray, you’ll know the Always On display is turned off. Alternatively, the Always On feature can be turned off directly from the Apple Watch. From your Apple Watch, open the Settings app, scroll down the page, tap ‘Display & Brightness,’ scroll down, tap ‘Always On,’ and tap the toggle to disable it. The steps are identical no matter which route you go. You just get to choose which method is easiest for you.

It’s important to note that only select Apple Watch models support the Always On display feature. If you have an Apple Watch Series 5, Series 6, or Series 7, you can turn the Always On display on/off as you see fit. If you have an Apple Watch Series 4 or older (or the Apple Watch SE), there’s no Always On support to begin with.

In the end, turning off Always On will only be for those desperately needing the extra battery or are away from an outlet for prolonged periods. With Always On display enabled, the Apple Watch already gets 18 hours of battery life, which is just enough to get through the day. With the combination of disabling Always On and turning on Power Reserve when needed, users could easily get more than a weekend’s worth of battery life if they need it.
