How to Make a Fortune Teller (Printable Diagram Included) + Cootie Catcher Design Ideas

Learn how to be a fortune teller with one of the coolest origami folding projects ever made. These origami fortune tellers go by many different names, some call them lice catchers (as we like to call them), paper talkers, and others.

Whatever you call them, we think they’re pretty fun – follow the step-by-step tutorial to create your own. But why stop there? Turn your lice trap into a puppet (we have plenty of printable templates for you, as well as decorative instructions when folded with origami).

We used to make lice traps at school, where they were basically fortune tellers as we used them to write the names of boys and girls (usually classmates) and decided our destiny with these homemade paper toys. It’s really fun, and while we love sharing fun tick hunting animal designs with you, the “basic” guessing game remains our favorite.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to make paper fortune tellers (origami is best, although you can cut out squares that serve the same purpose), as well as ideas for making them truly unique. – Decorate it with sharks, bears and even tigers – the fun of origami fortune teller never ends!

How did you become a fortune teller?

  • A piece of square paper/origami
  • If you’re making a lice trap doll, you’ll also need scissors, confetti, glue…

Step-by-step folding instructions

Start with a square piece of paper/a piece of origami. For plain paper fortune tellers, you can use plain paper; for lice trap dolls, you can also use construction paper. This works great.

Start folding. First, fold the origami paper in half to form a rectangle. Clean wrinkles. Apply.

Continue to fold the origami in half again, this time on the other side. Make a nice fold. Apply. You should see a “cross” on the square of paper.

Tip: You can also do a diagonal fold, which makes the last step easier. We usually skip this because it makes the lice-catching doll look cooler.

Turn the paper over so that the colored or fortune teller side faces the table.

Begin folding, placing one of the corners in the center of the paper.

Do the same for the other three corners. Fold them all to the center. folded.

When you fold all the corners to the center, you get a square again.

Turn the paper over.

Start folding again – bring the corners to the center.

Do the same for the other three corners.

fold. “Collapse”: When folded in half, the “triangle” should be on the inside and the “square” should be on the outside (see image below).

The rectangle has an “opening” on one side. Push your fingers into these openings and wiggle them slightly, as you continue to wiggle your tick traps will begin to form.

How to Make a Fortune Teller
What do you need

Step-by-step folding instructions
Start with a square paper / a sheet of origami paper. For a plain paper fortune teller, you can use plain paper – for cootie-catcher puppets, you can also use construction paper. That works well.

Start folding. First fold the piece of origami paper in half to make a long rectangle. Make the crease neat. Unfold.
Continue by folding the origami paper in half again, this time on the other side. Make a nice fold. Unfold. You should see a “cross” on your square paper.

Tip: You can also make diagonal folds – this will make the last step easier. We usually skip this because it makes the cootie-catching puppets look cooler.
Turn the paper over, the colored side or the side with the fortune teller design should face the table.
Start folding, bring one of the corners to the center of the paper.

Do the same with the other 3 corners. Fold them all towards the middle. Fold well.
Once you fold all the corners towards the center, you will get a square shape again.

Flip the paper.
Start folding again – bring the corners to the middle.

Do the same with the other 3 corners.

Fold in half. “Close it” – the “triangles” should be on the inside and the “squares” should be on the outside once you fold it in half (see photo below).

One side of the rectangle has “openings”. Push your fingers into these openings and wiggle it around a bit, as you continue to wiggle your cootie catcher will begin to form.
