This time, we’re going to show you not one, but two easy-to-follow tutorials on how to draw an owl step by step. Both owl guided drawing tutorials are very simple, the first draws a cartoon owl for you, while the second will help you draw a more realistic (but very simple) owl.

Owls are really pretty and make wonderful birds in the fall. With this night bird, we can’t have just one tutorial because there are many ways to draw one, so we’re sharing two. A more whimsical owl that glows when done in different colors, and a more realistic but easy to draw.

Owl Guide Drawing Instructions

what do you need:

  • Our printable instructional drawings (optional)
  • Paper
  • black pencil or marker
  • coloring supplies

Version 1: How to draw a simple cartoon owl

Start by drawing a slightly plump U shape.

Connect the ends of the U with curved “valleys”.

Draw the eyes. Start with the outer circle, then draw another circle inside the first circle.

Step 4

Draw a beak between the eyes.

Step 5

Add details around the eyes – small bows around the eyes (younger kids can skip this step).

Draw two curved lines for the wings.

Add feet.

Draw details on the belly and wings of the owl.

Version 2: How to draw a simple and realistic owl

Start by drawing an oval for the owl’s head.

Draw a beak on the lower half of the oval.

Draw another oval or “flat center” shape for the beak.

Draw two large black (or other color) circles for the owl’s eyes.

Continue to draw two triangles on top of the owl’s head to create the owl’s “ears” – the feathers.

The U shape under the head will do the body.

Two curves on the sides complete the fenders.

Step 8

The finishing touch: Add details to the owl’s body by drawing the feet and an inverted U shape on the body.

With this nocturnal bird, we couldn’t have just one tutorial, because there are many ways to draw one – so we’re sharing two. A more whimsical owl that will glow when done with different colors and another that is more realistic but still very easy to draw.

How to draw an owl step by step

What do you need:
our printable guided drawing sheets (optional)
paper
black pencil or marker
coloring supplies
Version 1: How to draw a simple cartoon owl
Step 1
Start by drawing a slightly chubby U-shape.
2nd step
Connect the endpoints of the U-shape with a curved “valley”.

Step 3
Draw the eyes. Start with the outer circles, then draw another circle inside the first one.

Step 4
Draw a beak between the eyes.

Step 5
Add details around the eyes – small arcs that go around both eyes (younger children can skip this step).

Step 6
Draw two curved lines for the wings.

Step 7
Add feet.

Step 8
Draw details on the owl’s belly and on its wings.

Step 9
You have just learned how to draw an owl. Color your drawing of an owl.

Version 2: How to draw an easy and more realistic owl
Step 1
Start by drawing an oval shape for the owl’s head.

2nd step
Draw a beak on the bottom half of the oval shape.

Step 3
Draw another oval shape or “flat heart” starting from the beak.

Step 4
Draw two large black (or other color) circles for the owl’s eyes.

Step 5
Continue by drawing two triangular shapes on top of the owl’s head to make the owl’s “ears” – the feathers.

Step 6
The U shape under the head will make the body.

Step 7
Two curved lines on the side complete the fenders.

Step 8
Final touches – draw the feet and an inverted U-shape inside the body to add detail to the owl’s body.

Step 9
Finished! You have learned how to draw a simple and more realistic owl. All that remains is to color your owl drawing.
