Halloween Kids Paper Chain Ideas

There are many fun characters your kids can make: jack-o-lanterns are probably the coolest, but black cats are also whimsical (oh, and vampires look cute, too).

This could be a great classroom project for kids to have each student make part of a necklace and then connect all the parts into a giant paper necklace. A friendly and fun Halloween classroom decoration.

Halloween Paper Chain Craft

How to Make a Halloween Paper Necklace?

what do you need:

  • orange, green, black and white
  • Optional: Our Jack o Lantern Paper Necklace Printable Template
  • Scotch tape
  • google eyes
  • ruler
  • A pair of scissors
  • mark
  • glue stick

Step-by-step instructions

Start by cutting strips about 2 inches wide and 8.5 inches long.

They don’t have to be exact dimensions, just a little so that the loops match up when making the paper chain.

make a pumpkin

Let’s start with the pumpkin first.

Take a piece of green paper and cut out a leaf shape and a small rectangle.

Draw a carved pumpkin face in the center of the orange strip of paper.

Wrap it with orange strips and secure with tape.

Use glue or tape to attach the leaves and stems to the paper bow.

Let’s make a black Halloween cat in the future. Glue two sticky eyes or sticky eye stickers to the black strips.

If you’re using a lighter black paper, use a black marker to outline the nose and mouth (if you’re using a darker paper, use a white gel pen).

Cut 6 short, thin strips from white paper. Stick them next to the nose, we have whiskers.

Next, let’s make a pair of ears.

Cut two small triangles out of black paper for the ears.

Use tape behind the ear to secure it to the black strap; using school glue will also work.

Make a bow out of paper and glue the ends together.

The final piece of the Halloween paper chain is Frankenstein’s monster.

Add all the spooky details this monster needs, including the haircut (which can be drawn or pasted).

If you cut her hair, make a rectangle out of black paper and make the edges of her hair jagged. glued to the head.

Put on your Frankenstein and finish it off with tape.

Join them now. Cut two pieces of paper.

Use them to connect three Halloween friends. Add a ribbon to connect the character to the regular link – this will make all your Halloween characters look ahead.

There are lots of fun characters your kids can create – Jack-o-lanterns are probably the coolest, but black cats are also whimsical (ooh and vampires would look pretty cute too).

How to make a Halloween paper chain
What do you need:
orange, green, black and white
optional – our printable template for the Jack o Lantern paper chain
clear tape
google eyes
ruler
the scissors
Markers
glue stick
Step by step instructions

Start by cutting strips of paper about 2 inches wide and 8.5 inches long.
They don’t need to be exact in size, just somewhat even so the loops match when you make the paper chain.

make a pumpkin
We’ll start with the pumpkin first.
Take green paper and cut out a leaf shape and a small rectangle.
Draw a carved pumpkin face in the middle of the strip of orange paper.

Wrap the orange strip around it and secure it with tape.

With glue or tape, secure the leaf and stem to the paper loop.

make a cat
Moving forward, let’s make a Halloween black cat. Glue two googly eyes or wiggly eye stickers to the strip of black paper.
If you are working with lighter black paper, draw the nose and mouth with a black marker (use a white gel pen if you are working with darker paper).

Cut 6 thin, short strips of paper from the white paper. Glue them next to the nose – we have whiskers.

Next, let’s make a pair of ears.
Cut two small triangles of black paper for the ears.
Use tape on the back of the ears to secure it to the black band – using school glue will work just as well.
Loop the paper and glue the ends together.

make a monster
The final part of the Halloween paper chain is Frankenstein’s monster.
Add all the creepy details this monster needs – the haircut too (can be drawn or glued on).

If you cut her hair, make a rectangle out of the black paper and give one edge a jagged finish for her hair. Glue on the head.
Buckle your Frankenstein and tape to finish.

Now to string them together. Cut two strips of paper.
Use them to connect the three Halloween friends. Add tape to connect the characters to the simple links – this will make all your Halloween characters face forward.
