Fairies are magical, and you can easily capture some of that magic by creating your own fairy garden. This can be made from materials you pick up on nature walks or purchased from the nearest craft store (or similar).

We have to warn you that making a rock fairy house is incredible and you may find it hard to stop after making the first one. But they can be placed almost anywhere, so the more you do it, the more the magic will spread.

step by step explanation

If your stone is from nature, wash it and let it dry completely.

Paint with white paint. Depending on the pigmentation of the paint, you may need to apply several coats. You can also keep the stone in its natural color. Let the paint dry.

Once the paint is dry, paint the top of the stone red.

Paint the door brown with a black frame while you wait for the red paint to dry.

Also draw a small window.

Tip: If you find it difficult to paint windows or doors with a brush, you can also use a permanent marker to paint them.

Draw a black line under the red ceiling.

We are turning our fairy house into mushrooms, so white dots are a must. You can paint them with a brush, or you can dip a pencil eraser in white paint and rub the dots onto the stone.

Allow the paint to dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

Find a beautiful glass jar that matches your stone and has plenty of room for fairy-tale garden decor.

Add some sand or pebbles to the pot.

Push the stone into the pot. Add more sand or pebbles if necessary.

Add moss and other decorations to your fairy garden if you wish.

Now all you have to do is find a decent place for your magical DIY fairy garden.

What do you need:
a large flat rock (other shapes will work too, but a flat round one is great). – we have ours by the river, but craft stores usually have them too (or garden stores)
acrylic paints, white, black, brown, red
paint brushes
pencil with eraser (optional)
decorative sand or small pebbles – again, craft stores have them at a reasonable price, nature is also your friend
foam (store bought or from nature)
glass jar
Optional: other magic decorations (shells, precious stones, sea glass…), varnish

Step by step tutorial
If you got your stone from nature, wash it and let it dry completely.
Paint with white paint. Depending on the pigmentation of the paint, you may need to apply multiple coats. You can also leave the rock in its natural color. Let the paint dry.

Once the paint is dry, paint the top of the stone red.

While you wait for the red paint to dry, paint the doors – brown ones with a black frame.

Also draw a small window.
Tip: If you find it difficult to paint windows or doors with a brush, you can also draw them with a permanent marker.

Paint or draw a black line under the red roof.
We’re making our fairy house a mushroom, so white spots are a must. You can paint them with a brush, or you can dip the eraser of a pencil in white paint and dab the round dots on the stone.
Let the paint dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Find a pretty glass jar that will fit your stone and still have enough room for fairy garden decorations.

Add some sand or pebbles to the jar.

Push the stone into the jar. Add more sand or pebbles if needed.
Add moss and, if desired, other decorations to your fairy garden.

Now all you have to do is find a worthy spot for your magical DIY fairy garden.
